In Tampa, Florida, a man who was hidden by the name Jason, was to test the Tampa International Airport's security. His task was to walk through the metal detector portal while wearing a "back support" that was really a fake bomb. The mock bomb was as slim as a wallet and its fuse was the size of a cigarette. He wraps the support around his torso and the bombs fits comfortably on his back. Jason was also wearing a black shirt with a maroon golf shirt which really hides the fake bomb. Jason wants to succeed at his task but also fail because if he succeeds it means that the security at this specific airport is vulnerable to real threats but if he fails, that means that the security is on top of their game. He is a covert tester for the Transportation Security Administration and has been finding weaknesses of security for five years by mocking bombs before changing to really small devices that are evolved around terrorists threats. Jason walks through the metal detector portal and as expected, the alarm goes off because he was also wearing a metal knee. Security then pulls him aside and checks him with a metal hand detector all around his body. As security pats him around his back, the fake bomb was found. Although Jason said that he was having a back problem and needs to wear the back support and security lets him through which means that there was a fake bomb in the airport. It was said by TSA that cultural backgrounds of security can fall for these types of reasoning (being a middle aged man wearing a back support) but the security could also performed other tasks to make sure it was really a back support instead of a fake bomb.

This was interesting to me because it shows how security really needs to fix those small holes in airports because as a traveler, I want to make sure that my flight from one place to another is safe. It proves how airport security needs to be trained more of how to manage different situations like this because actual bombs get smaller and smaller until it becomes just another object like the "back support". In my opinion, I think TSA does a good job at making tests like this to see the airport's vulnerability to terrorist threats.

This affects the world because people who also travels wants to depart and arrive at their destinations as safely as possible. I think this is an important issue to look at, especially presidential candidates because airport security needs to improve more.

In crowed animal shelters, unwanted animals are put in a gas chamber and are euthanized.
I despise how people have the conscience to euthanized innocent animals.

By looking at this picture, it's obvious that this person is having a shot of euphoria. Who says you can't do multiple cartwheels on the beach?
I had a feeling of euphoria when I found out that I was going to the Philippines to see my childhood buddy.

Before a loved one is laid down to rest, either a priest, family member or whoever says a eulogy to honor the person they lost.
I recited a eulogy after my friend died, to honor the friendship we had.

When I first saw this picture, the first word that came to mind was erratic. Seeing a house like this is pretty odd and eccentric.
His sister loves to get the attention from everyone, which is why she wears such erractic jewelries that includes a necklace made out of starburst wrappers.

This piano probably had a nice, clean texture where the keys weren't missing. Although now, the piano that might've played beautiful music is slowly eroding.
Heavy rains in the Philippines causes land and homes to erode, which results in a landslide and people losing their homes.

Definitions:
1) equivocate - to avoid making an explicit statement
2) eradicate - to remove or destroy utterly; extirpate
3) erode - destroy by slow consumption or disintegration
4) erratic - eccentric; queer
5) escalate - to increase in intensity
6) esoteric - understood by or meant for only the select few
7) espouse - to make one's own; adopt or embrace, as a cause
8) eulogy - a set oration in honor of a deceased person
9) euphoria - a feeling of happiness
10) euthanasia - mercy killing
11) epitome - a person or thing that is typical of or possesses to a high degree the features of a whole class

What you like and don't like about "Why We Fight".

Eisenhower warned against the rise of the "military-industrial complex". Did his warning come true?

Think about the anatomy of the American War Machine and include any questions/comments you may have.

Ending Notes of the movie:
trained people to say things in a certain way for the media
no looked for the reasons or rationals of why we went in (media)

To aspire is to long for something or seek ambiously. To me this picture defines aspire because it shows a kid looking at a shadow of someone hip-hop dancing. I think this kid is aiming to be a dancer when he grows older.
As a kid, I've always aspired to become one of the world's best hip-hop dancer.

Heritage is something that comes or belongs to one by reason of birth. This picture shows one of the famous Filipino folk dances called "Tinikling". Even though there are plenty of Filipinos here in the U.S. there are still studios and celebrations that perform different folk dances of the Philippines.
Even though I was brought up here in the U.S. my parents made sure I was still aware of my Filipino heritage.

At a first glance, the waterfall is what catches everyone's attention because it appears in the middle of snow. I see this defines desultory because the small waterfall is random and it is surprising to see it somewhere where there is snow.
Even though Mike was always voted MVP on his basketball team, his skills seemed to show desultory since he would only practice before a game but inconsistently appear to regular practices.

Feeling or showing profound hopelessness or gloom can be seen in this picture and would be known as despondent. This picture was taken in the Philippines where millions of street children live their lives picking up others trash (especially food). Sometimes they become hopeless of having a better future for themselves.
As we walked down the streets of Manila, we saw the despondent look on the children's eyes as they approached us for change or food.

This picture shows a soldier ready to fight on a battlefield. This soldier (all soldiers in general) shows an act of intrepid, resolutely courageous.
After Joey got knocked out in the first round, he remained intrepid towards his opponent and got up to fight again with no shame.

Definitions
1. intrepid (adj.)- resolutely courageous; fearless
2. trepidation (n.) - a state of alarm or dread; apprehension
3. despondent (adj.)- feeling/showing profound hopelessness or gloom
4. decorum (n.)- propriety in manners and conduct
5. aspire (v.)- to long, aim, or seek ambitiously
6. vacillate (v.)- to be indecisive or irresolute
7. desultory (adj.)- lacking in consistency; random
8. fallacy (n.)- a deceptive, misleading, or false notion
9. formidable (adj.)- causing fear, apprehension, or dread
10. heritage (n.)- something that comes or belongs to one by reason of birth
11. guru (n.)- an intellectual or spiritual guide or leader

Candidate Profile Project

With the large number of candidates campaigning to become the next president, it can be difficult to distinguish various candidates from on another. Using Online NewsHour information available at http://www.pbs.org/newshour/vote2008/index.html along with other Internet and primary sources, answer each question below and create a candidate profile that describes one of the people campaigning to be president. Be prepared to share your candidate profile with classmates, and stage a mini-debate.

The candidate I am profiling is:
The political party this candidate represents is:
What other political offices has this person had in his/her career, if any?
What prior political and leadership experience does this candidate have that makes him/her qualified to be the next president?
What is this candidate's point of view on major issues, such as:
The Iraq War
national security
education
healthcare
the economy
taxes
global warming
nuclear weapons
other topics of concern to me.

Before the South Carolina Primary, it is said that black women are facing a dilemma of whether to vote for their race or their gender. Recent polls show black women are expected to make up more than a third of all Democratic voters for this comeing primary. Some locals of S.C. said that they did wanted a woman or an African-American to be in the White House but they didn't expect that it would have to be a choice of who to vote for. Some say that they would vote for Clinton because she has more experience than Obama and others say that Obama is ready for this if he goes through. Although a lot of the black women in that state are undecided and will instead look at the issues rather than the race or gender which I do agree with. Others say that whoever wins between the two, "it will be a great day for America".

Plath, Sylvia. The Bell Jar. New York. HarperCollins Publishers: 1996.

After reading the book A Million Little Pieces, I wanted to read another book similar to the plot of that book. I decided to read this book because it was recommended to me by my friend Anna and this book had a similar plot to the book I last read. This book isn't really an autobiography but it does include some invents that relate to the author's personal life. So I would say that this is still a fictional novel. This book takes place in New York City and in the Boston suburbs. It also takes place in a hospital that is around Boston. The time period that this book takes place in was during the 1950's.

This book was about how a young woman's experience leads to her insanity. Esther Greenwood is an intern at a fashion magazine after winning a scholarship. During this time, different events happened that led to her mental breakdown. Esther had to choose which way she wanted to go, whether to marry her boyfriend Buddy Willard or continue her passion of writing poetry and stories. Esther then decides to break up with Buddy after she visited him at his college and she decided to enroll in a summer program for writers but was rejected. The rejection to the summer program and the thought of having to spend her life with someone like Buddy may not be the life that she wanted to live. In my opinion, it was a life that she didn't want to face. More one in the book, she talks about her life in the hospital after a failed suicide attempt.

Esther Greenwood behaves in an unconventional way and struggles to live her life in an oppressive environment. She doesn't like people telling her what to do and how to live her life. The society she lives in expects her to have sex to a guy with manners after marriage. Although like her boyfriend Buddy, she didn't want to wait and saw the hypocrisy of this rule. The way her society affects her doesn't make her mad but led her to a suicide attempt. Because of Esther's mental illness, she starts to behave selfishly. She doesn't consider the effect her suicide attempts have on her mother and friends. She is an interesting character, although I saw her as a predictable character, meaning she those type of characters who lives a life that is going her way but leads to having illness or something going wrong in her life.

I liked reading this book, although I didn't really enjoyed it. I liked how the author wrote this book in a descriptive way and used personification throughout the book. I think this book talks about how to overcome things and I think it's a good book to learn from. Although I can't say it's my favorite, I would recommend it to others because it's pretty interesting how one event leads to another and ends up changing her life.

This is the only book that Sylvia Plath wrote but she did publish a few poetry of her own. She based the characters in her story to the people she knows which is why this book does relate to her own life. Although in the book, she ends with Esther recovering her illness, Plath took her own life on February 11, 1963 by placing her head in the oven while the gas was on.

People who visits Britain and requires visas will have to be fingerprinted starting on Monday. This was advised by the government. Immigration Minister Liam Byrne explained that those who are applying for British visa from the other 133 countries will have to have their fingerprints checked on a database. Ever since September 2006, the government has introduced this type of system and had already apprehended biometric information from about 1 million people. This system has already stopped about 500 cases of identity fraud. This is the government's new immigration strategy which helps authorities to point out who is using someones identity to work in Britain. This also proves that the government's employees are enabled to work legally in Britain. Although tourists from the U.S. and the E.U. do not require visas for visits to Britain will not be fingerprinted.

I think that system can work but there are frauds out there who are really good at hacking into the systems, even the government, and can fool this new technology. It's pretty easy to outsmart technology these days because there's always a way to do so. But I think that it's better to try something like this because identity theft is an issue that a lot of people are facing. I think that this is more secure than just having a social security number because it's not easy to copy a fingerprint (or is it?).

Whenever journalists at China's national braodcaster CCTV would log on, the first thing that greets them is a pop up on a screen that tells them what not to report. These notices would often be short but it contains strict instructions on how to develop a story. Censorship in China has been an everyday thing on reporting news there ever since the Chinese Communist Party has been in power. Recently this year journalists were warned a health scandal, how to report the death of Benazir Bhutto and to clear the confusion of a Hollywood film. These are just some issues that in China can be called sensitive and any story like this or any subject can still be foul. As 2007 came to an end, these three stories were given attention from censors that were working at China Central Television (CCTV). First of all, health is a hot topic for an ordinary Chinese person but the report of the death of a Chinese migrant worker was censored. There were no reasons to why it was censored. About two days after that story came out, reports that China had banned some Hollywood films from Chinese cinemas worried the CCTV censors. Censors decided that this particular story couldn't be reported at all but a reason wasn't given. The third story that caused problems was the death of Pakistan's Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Pakistan and China are close allies and the government doesn't want to cause any trouble between the two countries. Journalists received definite intructions on how to report the killing and were said to stick to the facts and not connect the incident of what was going on in Pakistan or the possibility of terrorism. Stories about health, education and inflation are closely monitored because these issues are usually controversial.

Frey, James. A Million Little Pieces. Great Britain. Random House: 2003.

I chose to read this book because it was recommended to me by a friend. I barely read books that talk about drug related issues and rehab but my friend said that I could learn a lot from one man’s perspective of going through rehab. This book is a memoir but it can’t be distinguished as a non-fiction because the author added some fictional events into the story. The book takes place in a rehabilitation clinic in Minnesota during the early 1990s.

The story starts as James suddenly wakes up on an airplane to Chicago, not knowing or remembering how he got on to the plane in the first place. He met his parents at the airport who takes James to a rehabilitation clinic. At that moment the reader finds out that James is 23 years old and has been an alcoholic for 10 years and a crack addict for 3 years. He is also wanted by the police in different states of a few charges. In the clinic, James was forced to stop using his substance and instead abuse a cold turkey. He meets different people in the clinic with different stories. These people play an important role in his life both during and after his time in the clinic. The book follows James through his painful experiences that leads up to his release from the clinic.

James Frey is a 23 year old man who is an alcoholic for 10 years and a crack addict for 3 years. He was a privilege child who grew up like an outcast which led him to drinking and smoking pot at an early age. He has problems following the rules in the clinic. He rejects the Twelve Step program which is the whole foundation of the treatment. He violates a lot of the major rules in the clinic. In the clinic, his stubbornness starts to fade and becomes determined to get sober. I selected this character because he possesses the quality of change. What really interested me was how the people around him were able to affect the way he thinks and acts. The whole plot helped change James to become sober and in the end tells a man to “pour the drink down the drain”.

Overall I thought that this book gave a different insight on how it is to be in a place like rehab. I liked the novel because it showed a man’s perspective on how it is to become sober. It was interesting because the book also included different stories of the different people who were in rehab with James. It taught me that everyone can change for the better. I would recommend this to other people because it’s worth reading.

This book compares to real life because there are some people in the world who are in this same situation. We see these types of people everywhere and there are people who do go into rehab, determined to get sober. I think that it’s important to read this because it shows what these people go through just to get sober.

I might have acted the same way that James acted in the beginning, stubborn. Although I would be determined to become sober to make by life better than it was before. I would end my story the same way he ended his story because it’s simple but it ends strong.

James Frey was a screenwriter and his screenplay for Kissing a Fool was turned into a movie in 1998. He really went through rehab in 1993 when he was 23 years old and spent 3 weeks there. I haven’t really read a book like this that talks about what happened to him at one point of his life and added some fictional facts into his own story. I realized that I could learn valuable lessons and qualities so I plan to read other books like this.

Brashares, Ann. The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. USA. Delacorte Press: 2001.

I chose to read this book because since I was going to be on a plane for a few hours, I wanted to read a book that refers to traveling. The truth is that my sister told me to read this book. This book is a teen fiction. It takes place in 4 different places: Oia, Greece; Baja California, Mexico; South Carolina; and Bethesda, Maryland during the early 21st century.

This book is about four best friends: Bridget, Lena, Carmen and Tibby. They have known each other for all of their lives and on their 15th summer as best friend, they will all be separated. Bridget is the athlete of the group and is going to attend soccer camp in Baja California. Lena is going to Greece to visit her grandparents. Carmen is going to visit her dad, who left both her and her mom when she was young. Tibby is the only one in the group who will be staying home working a summer job. The day before they all separate, they find a pair of pants that fit all four of them perfectly. They decide to share the pants during the summer, having each of them keep the pants for one week then mails it to the other. The summer becomes an unexpected journey for the four friends while they face tough decisions and different situations.

Lena Karigalis is the quiet, introspective of the group. She is the shy type of person and finds happiness in spending time alone and painting. She doesn’t trust all boys for she thinks that they only like her for her looks. She doesn’t really open up to people and is afraid that she’ll be alone forever. I chose Lena because I can relate more to her. What really interests me about her is how her fear for living alone made her finally open up to a Greek boy, Kostos, that she likes him.

I liked this book because it talked about how friends are always there for each other. It was pretty interesting seeing what the four friends go through during their summer and how they overcame different situations that they had to face. The pants symbolize the friendship that the four friends have and the positive influence that it had in their lives. It also taught me the importance of friendship. I would recommend this to others because it’s a heart warming book about friendship.

This book compares to real life because there are friends who admire their friendship with each other. This book reminds me of my friendship with my friends because we all come from different backgrounds with different qualities but we come together as one.

If I were to put myself in Lena’s position, I think I would’ve acted the same way. I think with my fear of having to live alone, I would’ve opened up to the guy that I am beginning to like. I think that the ending is good enough and I would’ve wanted it to end the same way.

Ann Brashares was born in Alexandria, Virginia during the 1960s. She worked as an editor but started writing in around 2001. I read a few books about friendship, but this was the only book that was simply written. I plan to read more books like this that talks about friendship.
